INTRODUCTION TO BIOMASS

What is biomass ?

Biomass is organic matter derived from living, or recently living organisms. Biomass can be used as a source of energy .

It is most often referred to plants or plant-based materials which are not used for food

or feed.

Environmental Effect

The production of bioenergy leaves the environment with better air quality. Biofuels are biodegradable. The carbon dioxide (CO2) released from biomass during the production of bioenergy is from carbon that circulates in the atmosphere in a loop through the process of photosynthesis and decomposition.

Hence, the production of bioenergy does not add extra (CO2) to the atmosphere like fossil fuels. Biofuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions and are a renewable source of energy. They are used to generate heat and electricity.
